Warsaw fortified – Costs 27m euros for anti-aircraft shelters and other security measures

The capital of Poland is fortified while the war in the neighboring country has already entered the third year of the war. Warsaw will spend 117 million zloty (27.3m euros) over the next two to three years on anti-aircraft shelters and other security measures, as the mayor of the Polish capital said today. While Poland, a NATO member country, has reassured its citizens that its position in the alliance ensures their security from a Russian attack, the invasion of its neighbouring country has led to preparations for possible blows. “On our own initiative, we did a census of shelter sites,” Mayor Rafael Trzaskovski said at a press conference. Underground car parking and metro stations are included in the areas of a total area of approximately 7 million square meters in Warsaw, which could serve as shelters, he clarified. “Hundred and seventeen million (zloty) to improve security – it is money for the next two to three years and we are ready to make more money available for this purpose,” Trzaskovski said. He added that hospitals will prepare for threats and citizens will be trained to react to an emergency. In 2022 the authorities had announced that the fire department controlled the situation of 62,000 anti-aircraft shelters across the country.
