Volvo EX30: Smaller carbon footprint than any other pure electric Volvo to date

EX30 has the smallest carbon footprint than any other pure electric Volvo to date. The conclusion arises from the life cycle assessment of the car (Life Cycle Assessment – LCA), available, according to which EX30 has a total carbon footprint of 23 tonnes per 200,000 km – about 60% lower than a XC40 with a petrol engine. The report on the carbon footprint identifies materials and processes contributing to the emissions of the car. Focusing exclusively on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), the report covers the car’s life cycle, from mining and processing raw materials to the end of the vehicle’s life. The use of wind-generated electricity to charge EX30 significantly reduces the carbon footprint compared to the global or European energy mix, by about 42% and 22% respectively. This underlines the need to accelerate investments in renewable energy infrastructure worldwide so that electric cars can make full use of their climate potential. Before it begins to be used, a car is designed, developed, constructed and transported – giving us several opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make progress in achieving each of our sustainability targets. The proportion of recycled materials in EX30 is the highest compared to any other Volvo car to date. Almost a quarter of aluminium and a fifth of steel are recycled material. In addition, about 17% of all car plastics, from interior to bumper parts, are made from recycled material. Thanks to initiatives across the supply chain and production, the impact of Volvo EX30 equipped with an LFP battery is estimated at 14.8 tonnes until its production is completed – just above the estimated 60% of the total carbon footprint of the model. This includes emissions from the production of materials and cars, but not emissions from the stages of the use and end-of-life of EX30. The production of EX30 began in November 2023 and the first cars were delivered to their owners in European markets at the end of last year. To date, EX30 has won important awards, such as: Small SUV/ Crossover of the Year, at the News UK Motor Awards, Carwow Car of the Year 2024 and Eco Warrior of the Year at TopGear.com Awards 2023, as well as the Car of the Year of the Sun newspaper.
