The measles in Europe – Two doses of the vaccine for travelers is recommended by the EODY

EUROPEAN UNION According to recent international epidemiological data, there has been an outbreak of measles in both European Union countries and outside the European Union, with an even greater outbreak since the beginning of the new year. Specifically , since the beginning of 2023 , 4,098 cases of measles have been reported, with 1,861 of them declared as new suspects and / or confirmed incidents from 5-6/02/2024 and so far, in nine countries of the European Union. More specifically, In 2024 4 measles-related deaths have been reported in the European Union. From 1/01/2023 to 31/12/2023 2,361 confirmed cases of measles from 23 countries of the European Union were reported. The majority of cases are observed: Romania (1755), Austria (186), France (118), Germany (82), Belgium (69), Poland (37), Italy (44), Spain (13) and Sweden (11). The remaining 124 confirmed cases were reported by Austria (27), Estonia (1), Germany (18), Greece (3), Hungary (6), Iceland (1), Ireland (1), Italy (59), and Portugal (6). The other countries have reported less than 10 confirmed cases in the corresponding period. EXTERNAL UNION/EUROPEAN ECONOMIC AREA From 124/01/2024 two (2) confirmed cases of measles from Switzerland were reported. As part of the wake-up of the Ministry of Health and EODY, in order to address possible increase in measles cases in the Greek population, travellers children and adults in countries with outbreak of cases are recommended to confirm their full vaccination with two doses of the mixed measles-red-parotitis vaccine (MMR vaccine) prior to the trip. With regard to the countries of the European Union, particular attention is being paid to travellers in Romania. It should be noted that travellers of children and adults abroad should check and update their basic vaccination for all required vaccines, in accordance with the instructions of the National Vaccination Programme.
