Samsung Pay: Cooperation with the Russian Mir payment system is discontinued

The cessation of service of her Mir payment cards from April 3 announced today (27.3.2024) Samsung Pay payment service, owned by South Korean Electronics. In particular, Samsung Pay said in an announcement that “as of April 3, 2024, adding and using Mir (Russia) cards to Samsung Pay will not be available.” The payment cards issued by Mir gained more value than when American competitive payment cards ceased their publication in Russia after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and their payment cards issued in Russia ceased to apply abroad. In February American authorities imposed additional sweeping sanctions against Russia, including in the National Pay Card System (NSPK), which manages Mir cards. At the same time, “the functionality of adding and using club/card loyalty cards to the Samsung Pay app will work unchanged”. Samsung Pay said its services would continue to operate in Belarus, which has also been subject to heavy Western sanctions. NSPK confirmed that the use of Mir cards in the Samsung Pay app would be suspended from April 3. “The mobile payment service pre-installed on Samsung smartphones suspends its partnership with the Mir payment system,” said NSPK, adding that the Mir Pay app can still be downloaded from RuStore, a Russian app for Android users, and Android App Gallery. The Reuters agency verified that the Mir Pay app is not available on Apple Store and Google Pay. “In an effort to make the lives of the Russians difficult, the Americans coordinated with the Koreans,” wrote Anton Gorelkin, vice president of the relevant parliamentary committee on information policy, in the Telegram application today.
