NATO is considering launching Russia’s missiles if its Member States are approaching

Two days after her complaints that Russian missiles violated her airspace come to light scenarios for his involvement. Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzei Shaina said yesterday Tuesday (26.03.2024) that NATO is considering shooting down Russian missiles in case they are too close to the Atlantic Alliance’s member-state border. The Polish government had announced on Sunday (24.03.2024) that a Russian cruise missile launched during the night against western Ukrainian cities invaded Polish airspace for 39 seconds. The Polish Ministry of Defence has assured that all anti-aircraft defence systems have been activated and that this missile would be shot down if there was any indication that it was heading towards a target on Polish territory. Yesterday, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Andrejay Shaina told RTF24 radio that “various thoughts are being analysed in NATO” following this incident, including the possibility of “missiles being shot down if too close to the borders” of the member states of the alliance, including Poland. But something that “can only be done with the agreement of the Ukrainian side and taking into account the international consequences,” added Mr. Shaina. Warsaw condemned the day before Monday (25.03,2024) the fact that Russia’s ambassador to Poland ignored his official call to the foreign ministry to give him a protest about the missile incident. Polish diplomacy then said Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski discussed the issue with NATO Secretary General Gens Stoltenberg. During the conference, Mr. Stoltenberg “remembered that NATO has greatly increased its vigilance and has strengthened its positions in the eastern wing of the alliance, especially Poland,” a senior officer of the North Atlantic Treaty Agency said yesterday. Poland had announced in late December that a Russian rocket violated its airspace in flight to Ukraine before leaving it a few minutes later. Always during the Polish authorities, a year earlier, another Russian cruise rocket, type KH-55 – which is capable of bringing both conventional and nuclear charges – fell in Poland, but its debris was not found until April 2023 from passing through a forest near Bidgosts (northern), about 500 km from the eastern border of the country. And, in November 2022, two people were killed when a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile crashed into the Polish village of Sevodov, very close to the border with Ukraine.
