He found that the Brexit is a “deep incision” and noted that while the EU is “slow and difficult”, the states must focus on common interests, which transcend national, as he insisted.
“Yes, Europe should focus on what is truly best for the nation-state,” said Merkel. “We Germans must never let ourselves believe that everyone will have a better future if you walk alone,” he added. “We are stronger when we are united,” he said.
In his message, the chancellor has pledged that the government will adopt measures to increase security after the attack on a christmas market in the German capital on the 19th of December. The responsibility for the attack, which killed 12 people, was taken over by the jihadist organisation Islamic State.
Called on Germans to show “consistency” against the “murderers who are full of hate” and to not abandon the democratic values after the deadly attack. He promised that he would increase “safety” and “freedom” in the country.
“With a common determination, we will hold our compassion and coherence in the world hate terrorists”, stressed Merkel.
