As another peculiar “Maginot Line” seems to have worked in the recent coup attempt calling on people to support the legitimate government, the Turkish imams. The muslim clerics have played a key role in the defeat of the coup on the night of 15 to 16 July, in accordance with the well-known Turkish political scientist, professor of international law at the University of Galatasaray in Istanbul.Emre Őktem
Shortly after the offensive group of the army to seize power in the country, the National Bureau of Religious affairs ordered that the imams of all mosques to they started to read the prayer, in order to express their support for the government. As mentioned , the imams encouraged also the muslims out on the streets, in order to show the support of the government and the authorities.
‘These actions of the religious leaders have played a key role in the victory over the coup plotters. I don’t know if they have a precedent in modern Turkish history, though the last time that happened in the Ottoman Empire, when the Sultan made an appeal to the imams for help during a rebellion of the janissaries”, underlines the scientist.
