Josh Cavallo, the world’s first openly gay footballer proposed to his partner on the field

The world’s first openly gay, Josh Cavallo made his partner on the field. Australian footballer Josh Cavallo, announced his engagement with his favorite Leighton Morrell through a moving social media post, in which he requested the help of Adelaide United’s team to surprise his partner’s marriage proposal. The team allowed Cavallo to “propose marriage” to Morrell at Coopers’ Stadium. The 24-year-old has been playing in Adelaide United since 2021 and announced that he was gay later that year with a moving video. In this way, Cavallo became the first first first-class footballer to make coming out and has since been a sound supporter of LGBT+ rights. The midfielder has been in relation to Morrell for quite some time, with the couple attending the New York Pride as well in 2023. The young man posted on his personal account on Instagram a number of photographs from their engagement, with Cavallo kneeling, and Morrell moved to put his hands on his face. Cavallo then stands up and laughs, while Morrell continues to cry, before a last picture with the couple’s hands in the lead. See this post on Instagram. Along with the photos, Cavallo wrote: “Starting this year with my fiancé. Mr & Mr Soon. I thank Adelaide United for helping set up this surprise. Your endless support means so much to me. You offered me a safe space in football, a space that I never thought could ever be possible, and you encouraged me to live every day of my life authentic. I felt it was right to share this special moment on the field, where it all started. The same-sex marriage was legalized in Australia in December 2017 , long before Cavalo did outing.” See this post on Instagram. “On October 27, 2021, I stood in front of the camera and told people who I am. Uncertain about my future in sports and whether the world of football would have a place for me and my sexuality,” he wrote then. “Now that my jersey is presented to me at the Australian Sports Museum, it leaves me incredibly moved. I want to keep using my platform to help people feel safe to step on this football field regardless of their identity. Together we evolve the global game of football, making it a welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community “.
