The birth of a myth Irton Sena was born on March 21, 1960 in São Paulo, to a wealthy family. He drove a cart for the first time when he was four years old, a gift from his father who introduced him to motor sports and began running in races at 13. In the following years he took part in many games in Brazil and South America and in 1977 became a South American cart champion, at the age of 17. In 1978 and 1980 he took part in the world kart championship, taking 2nd place. 1982 is the year – station as he makes the big leap in his career. He decides to leave the carts and deal with the single-seat formula. He moves to England and participates in Formula 2000 and 3000 games, impressing with his lead Formula 1. In 1984 he signs with Tolman’s team (Toleman) and manages to get his first rank on April 7 in Grand Prix, South Africa. But great success will come to the Monaco Grand Prix on June 3, 1984. On that day it rains down and he passes one by one his opponents and from the 13th place of the start, which was not particularly favorable, finally ends in 2nd place, leaving the Formula 1 world speechless. During the race a storm broke out and while he kept rising pace, as when the pavement was dry, many drivers began to give up their effort to end. The race was finally interrupted earlier due to the strong rainfall and his end found 24-year-old then Sena in second place. He could have even taken first place if the courts hadn’t stopped the race. His value as a driver had now been confirmed. That day he proved that on the wet pavement, he was truly invincible, a rumor that would follow him until his death. The following year he receives a transfer for Lotus (Lotus), in which he will remain until 1987, continuing his upward course. On 21 April 1985 he wins his first grand before on the Estoril track in Portugal. In total, he achieved 6 wins with Colin Chapman’s team, before moving to McLaren in 1988. His five years in MacLaren (1988–1993) were the most efficient of his career. He won three championships (1988, 1990, 1991), while his duels with Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell left time. In 1994 he left McLaren for Williams (Williams / Renault), in order to take the lead back to F1. Black May Day at the GP in San Marino On Sunday, May 1, 1994, it would become the San Marino Grand Prix on the Imola track. In the previous two days two major accidents had occurred: the first on Friday with the young Rubens Barrichello (Rubens Barrichello), who was seriously injured. The next day, Roland Rajenberger – Austrian driver of British MTV Simtek Ford in his first year in Formula, 34 years old at the time – did not have Baricello’s luck and found an instant death on the track, as after a severe collision at a speed of 314.9 km/h, he was seriously injured in the neck. On May Day 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix on the Imola track, his single seat, which featured problems all year round, went off the track at the Tambourello turn and collided on a concrete bar. Sena was seriously injured and exhaled a few hours later in a Bologna hospital, where he had been transferred. There, F1 time stopped, along with the hearts of all sports fans, who watched the match either as spectators or live on television. Senna’s companion, she confided that after Roland Rajenberger’s fatal accident she had seen Irton crying and begging the fight to be postponed, having a strange bad feeling. However, the fight was done properly. At 18:40, hospital emergency department chief Maria Teresa Fiandri announced that Irton Sena had died, but stated that his official time of death under Italian law was at 14:17, that is when he hit the wall and his brain stopped working. In Imola, the epilogue to the career and life of one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time was written. Brazilian President Itamar Franco, announcing his death from television, declared the country to a three-day national mourning, while placing the presidential plane at his family’s disposal to carry his body to Brazil. His body was transferred to Bologna Airport, where military honors were also attributed from there to Paris, where he departed for São Paulo. The scenes that evolved in his homeland were tragic. Everyone, in every corner, on every street, cried about the man who made them feel proud of their origins. Notable is that one of those who carried his coffin with him in, at the funeral, was his once eternal enemy, Alain Prost, who, in fact, as he said years later in an interview, with the death of Senna died and a piece of his own.
