In Cairo Kyriakos Mitsotakis along with European leaders – Key issue of migration

The Greek Prime Minister, together with the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leien, Georgia Meloni, Italy, Alexander de Croo of Belgium and Chancellor Karl Nehamer of Austria, is currently expected to visit Kyriakos Mitsotakis, along with the rest of the political leaders, in Cairo, is to recognise Egypt’s important and crucial role in the region of the Southern Mediterranean and Africa amid many challenges, with the cutting edge of migration and energy. The government notes that Kyriakos Mitsotakis has long shown the importance of European support for Egypt. It has highlighted, added, the importance of promoting a strategic cooperation agreement between the EU and Egypt. He was also the first European leader to have highlighted Egypt’s importance for the EU and for stability in the region, a few days after Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel (in the extraordinary convocation of the European Council by teleconference). Cairo’s role becomes more central due to developments in Gaza and challenges such as migration, for the management of which the EU is seeking cooperation with Egypt. It is recalled that Greece concluded in 2022 an agreement with Egypt on migration and mobility. The Prime Minister – who had also taken part in the “Peace Summit” for Gaza at the invitation of Abdel Fatah Al Sisi last October in Cairo – will have a bilateral meeting with the President of Egypt, while a meeting of the President of the European Commission and European leaders will follow with Mr Sisi. Greece maintains an excellent level of relations with Egypt, with which they share a common understanding of the wider Mediterranean region and the finding of solutions for stability and peace in the region. Our country was the first to highlight Egypt’s strategic importance and for the transfer of “green” electricity to Europe with the Greek-Egypt electricity interconnection project (GREGY) that can transfer clean energy to the EU and which joined projects of common European interest, while the key is cooperation with Cairo in migration.
