Hake: What to Watch When You Buy It

Every year we eat her garlic. What should we be careful when we go to buy the traditional plate of Annunciation? The cod (or cod) is a particularly popular fish in Greek households and the… main “table” of many on the day of the March 25th national anniversary and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Just because cod is so popular, cunning, they tend to mislead the consumer public by offering, at the same price, another cod-like fish but not? Ling. The Greek Consumers Association (EKE) gives some practical advice on the purchase of cod before the festive table of 25 March. The original wet or salted cod come from areas of the Atlantic, Pacific and Greenland. The Greek market supplies cod mainly from the Atlantic and Iceland, Finland and Norway. Pasted ling fish is usually sold next to authentic wet cod, so it is important to check the labels of the fish shop. Many suppliers describe in smaller letters the characteristic “Ling” or “Ling” and in larger letters the area of origin, e.g. ISLANDIA. Both authentic cod and ling have bones so the indication of this characteristic is not sufficient to avoid confusion. The cod has a characteristic white line that runs through its body along both sides. If it is not visible on both sides this should not worry us because the line on one side of the fish may be hidden because of the filleting. We can distinguish the quality of good cod, like any fish, from its color. It must be white, without spots or yellow hue and do not choose fish with visible alterations or yellowish color.
