E-commerce: 8 out of 10 Greeks buy online

Greece continues to grow rapidly, with e-commerce recording high levels of sales on the Greek market, according to the Information and Communication Business Association of Greece ( ). Almost 8 out of 10 Greeks are making online purchases now (77%), based on the APRC. In fact, today the average half-yearly expenditure has reached 1,000 euros in e-commerce, increased by 110 euros over a year earlier. The main products purchased online by the three top product categories, according to Focus Bari’s latest research data, are clothing (40%), shoes (33%) and electronics (28%). The turn of the Greeks in digital sales comes as a continuation of the ever-increasing penetration of the Internet into the lives of the Greeks. Now, all Greeks (96%) aged 13-74 years are Internet users, mainly connected by their mobile phone, and spend an average of 2 hours “conscious time” per day online. Indicative of the dependence of the Greek on the Internet is that today over 1 in 3 Greeks and over 1 in 2 members of Gen Z state that they could not live without internet! The Greeks are not just connected, but they also use emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence: Chat GPT is already used by one in four Greeks. Specifically 25% responds to use Chat GPT and has an account, 25% has never heard of it. 22% has heard of it but does not know exactly what it is and 28% use it as friends and acquaintances but not themselves. Social media penetration It may be that electronic markets go up to the agenda of Greek consumers, however, is not the main reason why they are connected to the Internet. For all demographic groups the main reason they are online is social media. Young ages even, according to Focus Bari’s research, arrive at an average of 3 hours a day “consciously” (as unrealized time scrolling on social likely is much more). Facebook – according to the latest edition of Focus on Tech Life by Focus Bari – is clearly the network of “greater 35+”, while Gen Z has dominated Instagram and equally “strong” and Tik Tok, which has developed rapidly over the last three years. What research highlights in the most clear way is that Greeks want to connect from everywhere and that is why they are fans of mobile internet. In fact, Greeks are mobile fanatics, with 92% browsing the Internet via the mobile (regardless of frequency) and 88% on a daily basis.
