Workshop Wired Communication of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras has created the application “EyeType”, which allowed users to type on their phone or on their tablet using only their eyes.
Evangelos Skadar was awarded the Innovation Award for 2015 from the EESTEC (European Association of Students of Electrical Engineering) among 51 other other Android applications that were received from 717 researchers from 54 countries of the world.
Also, this year awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for the specific application.
With this technology, given the possibility of drawing text with a look, through the monitoring and recording of eye movement. This is a real innovation in the use of mobile devices to enable communication mainly from people who suffer from syndromes in communication disorders (disease ALS – AmyotrophicLateralSclerosis, LIS (Locked-InSyndrome) or tetraplegia, and is not in a position to engage only the eyes.
The Skadar was born in 1985 in Patras, greece. He studied at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Patras and is now a ph. d. candidate at the Laboratory of Wire Communication. In April 2011, he worked for 3 months as a guest researcher at the technical University (EPFL) of Lausanne in Switzerland. The research focuses in the field of vision and of computers, and includes the identification of the eye, the tracking of the gaze, machine learning, object detection and tracking.
