What does it mean that a drug has side effects and what you need to know?

of Xenophon Τσούκαλη, M.D.
Side effects of a drug is any undesirable or harmful effect of the drug.
Every drug is a substance that affects one or more functions of the body, depending on what the substance contains.
The medicine we take to make the most of the times one of the properties. This does not mean that it will not occur, and the rest. This is the side effects. Something which is normal and bound to happen, it’s just not the reason for which we give the drug, and in this case it is unwanted.
In some other cases (rare) the drug may be present – for various reasons each time – some actions are unexpected, which often necessitate interruption of the award. Here we are talking about side effects.

The side effect, i.e. an adverse reaction…
the drug, is defined in european legislation as “a response to a medicinal product which is noxious and unintended”. This includes the side effects caused by the use of a drug within the terms of the marketing authorisation (e.x. the approved indications) and the use outside the terms of the marketing authorisation, such as errors, overdose, misuse, abuse, drug use and suspected adverse effects associated with workplace exposure.
Before a medicine is marketed, information on its safety and effectiveness is mainly limited to the experience gained from clinical trials, which can only detect the more common side effects. Some important side effects may be rare, delayed, or not directly related to the properties of the drug.

How serious the side effects are and what you can do?
There is a range of side effects and side effects of drugs. Some of these are relatively common and well-known in advance and as a point accepted in relation to the expected positive effect of the drug. There are other that are rare, can be serious, including the severe allergy, that can be life-threatening. However, many of these effects are προλήψιμες.
