“υπερχρεωμένης Greece” for military equipments is one of the highest in Europe, we read in the Welt, while the Ηandelsblatt stresses that the Greek crisis strikes again at a bad time, according to a report in the DW.
“Ironically, Greece has the most money for tanks” is the title of the article on the website of the Welt, in which the author comments on the data published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London (IISS) with respect to government expenditure on military armament systems of european countries which are members of NATO. The journal notes: “The new president of the united states, Donald Trump has asked the Europeans to do more to strengthen their internal security. However, the opposite is true. In accordance with a resolution of the IISS the costs of European military equipment declined in the last year in relation to the growing economic power”.
As noted, but then “only two countries in Europe, based on an analysis of british researchers, spending more than the planned 2% of GDP on armament systems.”. It is for Estonia and Greece. “Estonia and the debt-laden Greece spent respectively 2,2% and 2,4% of their GDP on their army”. As noted in the article, the heads of state and government of NATO countries have repeatedly agreed to the target of 2% for military spending. However, countries with great military power such as Great Britain, Germany and Poland spend a lot less in comparison with Greece, in fact below the required 2%.
