Weather: March was the hottest month of the last 15 years – High Temperature Record

The warmest of the last 15 years the Greeks lived according to the meteo, as Martis did not prove to be a “graduate” but instead gave “pass” to one – as everything presupposes – even warmer April. March 2024 was the warmest March since 2010 in Thessaly, Central Greece, Peloponnese and the Aegean islands (except Crete), according to the network 53 weather stations of meteo.gr of the National Observatory of Athens operating unhindered from 2010 to the present day. The average value of maximum daily temperatures fluctuated at almost high levels throughout the country, compared to the average of 2010 – 2019. This year’s March was characterized by many days with positive temperature deviations. In Thessaly and Central Greece the largest positive temperature deviations were recorded, with average monthly prices ranging up to 2.0 C above normal for the season levels. In the Aegean islands, including Crete, smaller deviations were recorded, +1.6°C. In northern Greece, March was the ninth consecutive month, since July 2023, which saw positive deviations (and in the four months with very large deviations of +2°C and above). Also, in Crete, the Peloponnese and the Dodecanese were the ninth consecutive month since July 2023 that saw positive deviations, but with slightly smaller prices than those of northern Greece. For Crete was the second hottest March since 2018, and for northern and western Greece was the third hottest March. The first ten days of the month were high positive temperature deviations of 4-5° C above normal levels for the season mainly in northern Greece and Thessaly. The temperature remained high for the season and the second 10-day, and only between 20-26 March were temperature values slightly below the mean value of the 2010–2019 period. The last five days recorded the highest positive deviations with record values, up to +12° C above normal for the season levels. In Athens, the average monthly deviation value of the maximum temperature was +1.8°C, with 24 of the 31 days of the month being warmer than normal for the season levels. In Thessaloniki, 25 days of the month were warmer than the average value of 2010-2019, where the average maximum temperature of the month ranged +1.5o C above normal levels. In Tinos and Agios Nikolaos Lassithi most days with a positive temperature deviation (28 days) followed by Dion with 27 days, Naoussa, Patras and Volos with 25 days.
