Vanna Pepani: They don’t want to hire actors, they want cracks

“If you want to hire an actor, go see a performance,” says the , who also answers the question if she would take in a performance of someone who has come out of reality and deals with theatre. Vanna Pepani, speaking to On Time weekend did not hide her view of producers hiring actors based on… followers! As a director, would you cooperate with one of the faces that came out of reality, e.g. with George Angelopoulos, who we see in the “Earth of the Olive”? I don’t know him and I can’t judge him. What I can say for sure is that as a director I would take any man – and I don’t just speak from reality – who wouldn’t have the actor’s theatrical education if I wanted him for a very specific thing. I mean, if for a role I couldn’t find an actor suitable, either from an outside appearance or from temperament – and I always talk about small “things”, not lead roles – in such a case I might even risk taking someone/a who has no training and working with him too much to be able to stand in a performance of mine. I am in favour of lifelong education in our profession and in favour of obtaining a professional license. How do you see what became known by your colleagues, that now some theatrical producers are asking to hire actors based on their number of followers on Instagram? If this happened – which would have happened, to be said, but I have not experienced it – we are talking about another job. They don’t want to hire actors, they want to hire fences. They want to hire people who do another profession. Because if you want to hire an actor, go see a performance of his, do a research on him, see where he’s played, other things you need to examine.
