UN Security Council: Russia, China vetoed US resolution on truce in Gaza Strip

It was more or less expected that at the UN Security Council meeting they would certainly put in the US resolution a truce in the Gaza Strip. Where applicable: Russia, as well as China, have vetoed the plan that spoke of a “need” for a six-week cease-fire in Gaza. The American draft resolution, which insists on the “need for immediate and lasting ceasefire” in relation to the release of hostages, received 11 votes in favour, three votes against (Russia, China and Algeria) and one abstention (Wiana) at the 15-member Security Council. Russian ambassador Vasili Nebenzia had betrayed his country’s stance when he had “denounced” a “substantial” resolution that does not directly require the ceasefire. Perhaps the delicate point, however, was the fact that the resolution submitted by the United States linked the ceasefire to the liberation of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas. It is typical that since the beginning of the war after Hamas invaded Israel on October 7, the US has prevented the same way, vetoing resolutions submitted by various countries as either making no reference to the extremist Islamist organization, or referring to the liberation of hostages. “China and Russia simply wanted to vote against a plan prepared by the US, because they preferred to see us fail rather than see the Security Council succeed,” reported US Ambassador Linda Thomas- Greenfield, speaking of a “cynic” decision by the two countries. France, by the mouth of President Emanuel Macron, stressed that it would work for a new UN resolution on ceasefire in Gaza. “After the veto of Russia and China a few minutes ago, we will continue work on the basis of the French draft resolution in the Security Council and work with our American, European and Arab partners to reach an agreement,” Macron stressed at the end of the EU Summit in Brussels. The French Ministry announced yesterday that it began drafting a resolution, saying they would submit a draft if the US resolution was not adopted.
