Thessaloniki: Homeowners guilty after the death of 66-year-old quadriplegic from fire

The owners of an elderly care center were convicted in the aftermath of an incident in which a 66-year-old who was accommodated in the . From the Three-Member Court of Appeals of Thessaloniki, he was sentenced to 2 years in prison with 3 years probation. Owners were found guilty of the death of a 66-year-old quadriplegic, after he broke out in the nursing home, in July 2019. In considering the case to a second degree, the court found the two defendants guilty of manslaughter by negligence, reducing the sentence by one year, in relation to the original judgment. The 66-year-old suffered significant burns and succumbed after hospitalization. The fire, according to the Fire Department, is suspected to have erupted from a cigarette, with the victim’s relatives testifying in court that he because of his quadriplegia was unable to hold the cigarette and smoked only with the help of third parties. The previous court has already given orders to investigate any criminal responsibilities of other persons. The indictment states that the fire detection did not work in the unfortunate man’s chamber because a cap had been placed, resulting in the fire burning for 20 minutes. The defendants denied their criminal responsibilities but did not convince the judges with their allegations.
