The “gymnastics” of the mind delays the symptoms of Alzheimer’s

Crosswords and other mental games, electronic and non…
they train the brain and retain a more “fresh” as the years go by, at best, merely delay the more middle-aged people the onset of symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but I don’t have a protective action in respect of the same the causes of the disease.
That concluded a new american scientific research, according to which, however, an exception to this are those people who belong to high risk group, because they have a genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s. They may actually benefit substantially from such “tricks” such as crossword puzzles. This concerns approximately one fifth of the population (20%) that have gene ΑΡΟΕ4 in their DNA.
The researchers, led by the Πρασάνθι Βερμούρι of the Mayo Clinic of Minnesota, who made the relevant publication in the journal “Neurology” of the American Academy of Neurology, analyzed nearly 400 people without dementia over the age of 70 years, who were divided into two groups: those who had higher educational level (above 14 years of study) and those who had a lower (under 14 years). Then, used diagnostic-imaging techniques (MRI and PET) to identify biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease.
It was found that those who have this gene, and in the past have been at least 14 years of education, while caring for and in the middle age, to maintain alert on the lookout, these people have actually lower levels of the protein amyloid, which forms the damaging “plaques” of Alzheimer’s in the brain.
But something similar does not happen for the rest of the 80% of people, despite all the crossword puzzles and other mental “training”. Not the case, according to the study, even to those who have the gene ΑΡΟΕ4, but not exercised mentally in middle age. But a 79χρονος practiced mentally, in the brain levels of the protein amyloid, respectively, of a 74-year-old who doesn’t “exercise” the mind.
The researchers pointed out that even those who are not carriers of the particular gene, do not be discouraged, but on the contrary they have every reason to be exercised physically and mentally (with the use of a computer, reading books, video games, solution of crossword puzzles etc.), because these activities usually help to delay the onset of memory loss and other cognitive problems.
