The development of RES in recent years in Greece – What the electric system will look like in 2030

Successive jumps take place year after year in Greece the production of electricity from (RES). As shown in the chart below, since 2018-2019 there has been a significant rise in installed power with a spearhead of photovoltaics. It is indicative that for this year the forecast is to add about 2 more GW of new renewable energy sources. Accordingly, the rate of demand covered by RES has been significantly strengthened by now exceeding 50% along with hydroelectrics. As the IPTO notes, the participation of “clean” production in demand coverage increased from about 10.5% in 2004 to over 30% since 2018 and peaked at 46% in 2022. After the year 2013 this participation is consistently over 25%, with an increasing trend. It is also noted that the production of hydroelectrics, which varies from year to year on the basis of climatic conditions, plays an important role in the formation of the share of net production in the balance. It is worth noting that IPTO in its new ten-year development plan also included an image from the future. Specifically, electricity in our country will be as follows in 2030 on the basis of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NSEC):
