The “Capital of Innovation” for 2017 for the Europe

“builds” the most innovative ecosystem, connecting via the digital highway of citizens, public agencies, universities, and businesses. The participating cities, in the context of the competition, which will open officially in March, will have to submit their proposals for the development of a comprehensive innovation ecosystem, demonstrating in practice that it contributes to the improvement of life of their residents. Requirement to get a city part in the competition, is to be located in a member country, participating in the Horizon 2020 programme and has more than 100,000 inhabitants. The winner receives a cash prize of €1 million, while to those who will occupy the second and third place will be given funds of €100,000 and €50.000 respectively.
The first city that became European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) two years ago, when, namely, the European Commission launched the institution in an effort to highlight the urban centers of Europe make a living, in innovation, it was the Barcelona.
Amsterdam
European Capital of Innovation 2016, was proclaimed Amsterdam, which prevailed among the other candidates, as it was considered that applying a bottom-up approach with regard to the “smart” development, start-ups, the “intelligent” living and digital social innovation. The city of Amsterdam prevailed in the contest for the promotion of the european Capital of Innovation, displacing the other eight cities, that formed the short list, claiming the title.
Specifically, in the final stretch for the title “iCapital” of Europe for the 2016 Amsterdam prevailed over the other finalists (Berlin, Eindhoven, Glasgow, Milan, Oxford, Paris, Turin and Vienna). The nine finalists were shortlisted among 36 overall european cities, which were initially in the race to claim the title. Second, after Amsterdam, occupied Turin, while the third won the Paris.
The features, identified and awarded by the organisers in cities, which found themselves in the final straight to claim the title, concerning, inter alia, the implementation of innovative models, based on partnerships of industry, science and society, the application of alternative models in the provision of public services, sharing, with “open” way of knowledge between the world perceived of innovative ecosystems, the strategy in open innovation, connectivity, and ingenuity, the support for socially innovative start-ups and the creation of new market opportunities in urban innovation.
