The 1992 historical banking strip is responsible for the precipitation in Kallirois

The land was literally opened in the middle lane of the road of Kallirois Street, in the stream of climb to Kallimarmaro Stadium in Athens, causing severe traffic problems in the area. At the point they rushed workshops of the Region of Attica and EYDAP in order to find out its causes and surprised to find that the hole created was due to the notorious riffi that had taken place at that point… 31 years ago! Since Wednesday evening (20/03/2024) when the problem was found, the district crews worked throughout the night in order for the hole to be closed and for the asphalt painting to take place early in the morning. What had happened in December 1992, Christmas Eve, the employees of the Work Bank working at the branch on Callirois Street 19 (now Eurobank operates there), found that unknown people had violated the armored vault where the customer lockers of the financial institution were located. Of the 1,151 lockers, 301 had been opened with their valuable contents stolen. According to the calculations, the value of the stolen goods reached $5 billion. The perpetrators to reach the basement with the lockers, had opened a tunnel starting from the bed of the Ilisos River, passing down Callirois Road. The burrow was about 25 meters long and was masterfully constructed after on this underground route were placed up rails on which a wagon was moving that pulled out the pieces of digging, without anyone realizing what was going on. In fact, digging is assumed to last even months. Worth mentioning is the fact that when the perpetrators entered the bank, some time during the weekend of 19-20 December 1992 the alarm went off but the security officials did not see anything tangible or any mobility on the bank’s ground floor, so they did not pay attention. The case remains unsolved until today. No matter how strange it may sound, it was this famous 1992 stripe that was responsible for the subsidence at the specific site of Kalliroe, as according to the relevant departments of the District, for all these years there had been absolutely no interference in strengthening the pavement, resulting in 31 years later, the land was torn in… two.
