Terrorist attack in Moscow: Russian channel made deepfake video to blame Ukraine

An Artificial Intelligence video seems to have built a Russian channel in order to blame Ukraine for it in Moscow. According to the BBC, one of the largest television channels in Russia NTV broadcast a deepfake video using audio created by AI as a “partisan” that Ukraine is involved in the terrorist attack in a concert hall near Moscow, where 133 people died. In the video, Ukraine’s highest security official, Oleksii Danilov sounds to say that “this is fun in Moscow today. I think it’s really fun. I would like to believe that we will arrange such fun for them more often.” According to the BBC, the video consists of two interviews published last week. Danilov’s voice was created using Artificial Intelligence, according to an expert. The two interviews used to create the fake video are accessible on YouTube: one – dated March 19 – includes Danilov and the other – dated March 16 – Ukraine’s military service chief Kirillo Budanov. Presenters interviewing Budanov are seen in the NTV’s fake video, wearing the exact same clothes as the same background behind them. Danilov’s quote appearing on the NTV video cannot be heard in the original March 16 interview, making it possible that the sound has been created by AI. Sam Gregory, an expert on content created by artificial intelligence, told the BBC that the video aired by NTV was probably deepfake and Danilov’s voice in it seemed to be “deepfake voice clone”.
