Tend to live longer white sharks

The great white sharks, top predators of the oceans, the fear and the terror of fish and people, is developed with a much slower rate and live a lot more years than believed until now scientists…
The new, more precise, calculations elevate the age of these sharks, particularly males, to at least the 70 instead of the 20 – 30 years, which was considered until today. This makes the white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) one of the most long-lived sophisticated marine creatures.
The researchers, led by Li Ling Χαμαντί of the american Oceanographic Institute Woods Hole and the university of MIT, who made the relevant publication in the journal “PLoS One”, according to the BBC and “Science”, they used the radioactive fallout from the nuclear tests of the Cold War the decades of the 50’s and 60’s, which have been absorbed by the sharks, and have been incorporated in the skeleton. With this “trick” -and knowing the time-decay of the isotopes of radioactive carbon – emerged for the first time, a very best estimate for the age of the shark.
The new estimate is that the males live to around 70 years (they even found a 73 years old), while the female about 40 years. These elevated προσδόκιμα life mean that white sharks arrive late sexual maturity, than, what they regarded as now, the marine biologists.
Scientists hope that the new knowledge will help in better protection of the species, while “terrorizing” other species, in fact, is threatened and the same from the hunting of fishermen and other natural environmental pressures.
As said, the Li Ling Χαμαντί, “everyone thinks they know these creatures, that the world either loves or hates. However, from a scientific point of view, we’re just now beginning to understand what they eat, where they go and how they live”.
