Tembi: Monument of the municipality of Athens for the victims of the tragedy

The creation of a monument for the victims of the railway accident in the city council of Athens decided unanimously. In his proposal to set up a monument for those who died tragically in the wreckage of the trains in Tembi, the mayor of Athens, Harry Duke said: “One year after the tragedy, the municipality of Athens, with respect to the people lost and their relatives, wishes to honor their memory and unite their voice with all those who claim justice and a state safe and just […] We therefore pledge that a monument will be created, honoring the memory of our fellow humans and maintaining the need for truth, justice and security.” The selection of the site, as well as the type of monument, will be decided jointly with the competent authorities of the municipality, in consultation with the association of the relatives of the victims, with which a meeting has already taken place. It is worth noting that the union of the municipality’s cleaning workers asked to participate financially in the construction of the monument, as a tribute. All the factions agreed, although there were “disambiguations” earlier, not about the construction of the monument, but about the issue that had arisen by eradicating the names of the victims outside the Parliament, with Costas Bakoyannis talking about shifting responsibilities and targeting the workers by the municipal Authority, and the Duke talking about “hybris” and “poisoned comments” and answering how the municipal authority supported the workers, revealing that it was not their fault, but the head of parliament. During the present (p. 27.03.2024) city council, an issue arose for a concert scheduled for April with the participation of the municipality of Athens and in collaboration with the embassy of Israel. The People’s Conspiracy put it, caused the reaction of most parties, with the Mayor of Athens answering what was in the programme approved by the previous municipal authority last year – and unanimously – and added: “It doesn’t suit me, I don’t like it, I don’t know what sanctions there are, but we’ll see if it can be cancelled”.
