health suffers from the syndrome of professional burnout (burnout syndrome) in public hospitals in the country, says the Agency Fm, the assistant professor of epidemiology and occupational health, University of Thessaly, specialist occupational physician George Ραχιώτης.
It also states that employees who are experiencing burnout are at an 84% higher risk of developing diabetes and a 41% greater risk of developing coronary heart disease, than those who do not suffer from “burn out syndrome”.
The main Ραχιώτης also gives guidelines for the treatment of burnout, which, however, according to the president of the court held negligence Michalis Giannakos, this time it’s humanly impossible to be implemented by the nursing staff due to vacant positions in the NHS.
And the problem appears more strongly to nurses than any other specialty of the health professionals, since as pointed out in mr. Gianakos, the syndrome of professional burnout among nurses especially, reaches about 60%.
At the same time in addition to the burnout health care professionals in public hospitals, the last are often faced with violence from patients or their relatives, which according to mr. Ραχιώτη have increased, mainly due to the large waiting time
What is the syndrome of professional burnout
The syndrome of professional burn-out, internationally established as the burnout syndrome, according to mr Ραχιώτη is composed essentially by three parameters:” When the worker receives pressure from the working environment that exceeds the capabilities of the, then reacts, and we have first the appearance of emotional burnout, where practically “empties” the man and can not cope with the tasks. The second element is the depersonalisation, where the employee is not interested in the result of his work, and the third element is the reduced performance. These three parameters are a response to stress. The “burn out syndrome” is not identical with the stress. The stress, however, can cause the syndrome”.
In rates of 40-55% in burnout for health professionals in public hospitals
As mr Ραχιώτης, the National Health System is plagued by the syndrome of professional burnout , according to studies from the Greek reality, given the large cuts in resources. “A study conducted by the University of Thessaly in cooperation with the National School of Public Health and published in 2014 , the scientific journal International Journal of Medical Sciences, showed that the rates of burnout in Greek hospitals range from 40-55%. Employees of public hospitals, who have reported shortages of materials, and basic materials, were three times more likely to develop burnout. Also the vast majority of workers, i.e. an 88% reported that these shortages are as a result of the reduction of the level of care provided to the patient”.
