The term Σπετσναζ is a general term for special forces in Russian and is used in many post-soviet states. Historically, the term referred to special military units controlled by the military intelligence service, GRU (Spetsnaz GRU). It also describes the special assignment units or units of other ministries (such as Ministry of research and rescue) in post-soviet countries.
However, as the term Spetsnaz is a Russian origin is usually associated with the special forces of Russia, although other post-soviet states are often referred to in the special forces with the same term, having inherited special units from the now dissolved Soviet security services.
The Russian special forces have taken part in various missions such as, for example, in operation Storm 333 (Operation Storm-333) during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Spetnaz participated in many local conflicts, like the civil war in Tajikistan, in the wars in Chechnya, in the Russian-Georgian war and the recent crisis in the Crimea. Forces Spetsnaz have also been called upon to resolve several hostage situations.
