Solar energy in 12 major ports of India

The promotion of solar energy in India has gained…
a new dynamic, as well as the Department of Merchant Shipping recently announced that it plans to install 82,64 megawatts of solar energy in 12 major ports in the country.
The funds required for the solar installations will be allocated from the resources of their own ports, without any contribution from the government, as reported by the secretary of state for Shipping Pon Ραντακρισνάν in a written statement to the parliament of the country.
This communication is in the context of the initiative “Green Port” of the indian government that was launched earlier this year, which aims for a “cleaner and greener” airports and ports through the use of renewable energy technology.
The initiative will also contribute to the achievement of the mandatory targets of renewable energy sources, as defined by the government, which provide for a certain minimum percentage of renewable energy in the total energy mix.
The indian ports, such as the Βιζάγκ, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, New Mangalore, have already acquired facilities 6,84 megawatts, with an additional 16 megawatts is expected by March of next year.
In addition, the ministry of Civil Aviation of India has recently announced that it is planning the installation of 148 megawatts of solar power at 143 airports in the whole territory of the country.
Several ports around the world have solar pv installations.
Recently, the port Τουρόνγκ in Singapore, in collaboration with a private company, completed the installation of a 9.5 megawatt solar power on the roofs of the storage buildings, making it the largest solar installation at a port in the world.
