Slovakia: Bear walked around town and sent two people to hospital – Video Document

The hospital ended up with two people who happened to be in the one-way, downtown Liptowski Mikulas. According to the BBC, a 49-year-old woman was injured in the shoulder, while a 72-year-old man was hospitalized for head injury, confirmed Slovak city officials, while a video of the bear running on the streets of the city are running around the internet. Information reported that police drove the bear out of town and into a forest. The video shows the bear running and chasing a man on a city sidewalk. It is noted that last week a 31-year-old died tragically from a bear while walking with her partner in a forest in the Low Tatra mountains of Slovakia. Her partner told the police that once they saw the bear they started running in different directions. The girl’s lifeless body was found hours later by a police special dog. Experts note that from 1989 bears returned to their natural habitat in the Carpathian mountain range, ranging from Romania to western Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland. The Slovak Ministry of the Environment is now examining with Romania a proposal at the next EU Council of Environment Ministers for reclassification of bears into the list of protected species, as their increasing number means that they are no longer in danger and can be selectively killed. However, researchers stress that there is no increase in Slovakia’s estimated population of bears, which, they say, remains stable at around 1,275.
