Romeo and Juliet at the Athens Concert Hall from 16 to 20 May

A large international co-production between Greece and Turkey is currently being prepared with one of the most important classic texts of the world dramaturgy, William Shakespeare’s “Roman & Juliet”. Turkey’s State Theatre in collaboration with the Athens Music Hall and the cultural organization Lykofos of George Lykiardopoulos for the first time join forces to present a separate reading of William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy with Greek and Turkish actors directed by Leyteri Jovanidis. This is an extremely ambitious and demanding project, which aims to be a bridge between the two countries, Greece and Turkey, as a unique opportunity for Greek and Turkish artists to cooperate and unite their voices. The performance will premiere in Ankara on 19 April and will then be presented in Istanbul, while the premiere in Greece will be given on 16 May at the Athens Concert Hall. “Roman and Juliet” is the strongest love story ever written. The two rival families in this performance become the Greek Capulets and the Turkish Montegues. In each family its members chat with their language and whenever the two rival families meet, they communicate with the only common international language they know, English. A particular trilingual performance, with supertitles, where two peoples – two families with different religions and cultures, watered by an ancient conflict, follow a blind hatred. But despite this hatred and hatred that separates families, Greek Juliet and Turkish Romeo fall in love defying all obstacles, teaching the value of love through Shakespeare’s poetic word. The iconic Shakespearean roles are embodied by Kalliopi Haska and Alp Ünsa l , while next to them starring great names of the theatre: Roula Paterakis (paramana), Eray Eserol (Father Laurentis), Nikos Karathanos (Kapulettos), Maria Diakopanagiotou (Kapulletou), Şevki Çepa (Merkoutios), Efe Akercan (Benvolio), Spyros Maragoudakis (Tyvaldos), Nikos Constantopoulos (Paris), Dimitris Charalabopoulos (Sampson/Service). This excellent opportunity of the partnership between the two countries, Greece and Turkey and the three important organisations, artistic and technical factors from both countries demonstrates the possibility and will of cooperation, with a view to a common artistic expression based on mutual and sincere respect for each other. Important helper in this project, the General and Artistic Director of the State Theatre of Turkey, Mr. Tamer Karadağlı.
