The city in the Aspromonte mountains of Italy was established in the eleventh century and the roots of its former inhabitants may reach by antiquity. The Greeks began colonizing the Kalavria region, the finger at the tip of the boot of Italy, in the eighth century B.C.E. Southern Italy, during the centuries, continued to accept waves of Greek immigrants, displaced from the eastern Empire. The newcomers revived the Greek-speaking minorities and often “saving” from the disappearance of local dialects. A village in which you may hear the local dialect Greko, or Italian Greek, is the Rogudi Nuovo -New Rogudi, on the outskirts of the city of Reggio. Today’s Rogudi was founded by people from the old Roghudi Vecchio. The contrast between the two is clear: One is inhabited, the other is a ghost town. Rogudi Nuovo was founded in 1973 , after two successive flooding had made the Rogudi Vecchio uninhabited. Only 11 miles separate the villages, but their access is an adventure through rough roads that cross lonely, rough lands in Aspromonte National Park.
