The Sebastiani and her colleagues analyzed data from the Long Life Family Study, an investigation of 551 families, many of whose members lived to deep old age. The women who have their last child after 33 were twice as likely to live until 95 years of age and older, compared with those who had their last child until the age of 29.
The researchers suspect that the DNA of these women may be host genetic variants that slow aging and reduce the risk for diseases associated with age and can interfere with fertility (such as ovarian cancer or diabetes). Women with the variants could possibly bear children for a longer period of time, increasing the chances to pass these genes on to future generations.
