“ARCHELON”, recorded 1021 turtles and many nests.
Already, 482 nests of caretta-caretta hosted this year in the summer in the Sequences of Zakynthos, which is a record number compared with the last five years, the most important nesting beach of caretta in the Mediterranean.
It is a valuable clinic for this unique species, which is why organisations such as the WWF, the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, ARCHELON, vigilant for preservation.
In fact, according to the WWF, 27 June, two πυροφύλακες protect daily the area and are on the alert for any threat could endanger the region and the caretta – caretta sea turtles, with the cooperation of the organization of Greece and the Σοηδίας.
The area of Σεκανίων is important, as it stresses the organization, because it is in the core of the National Marine Park and the human presence is prohibited, as it can put risk of the process of nesting of the caretta-caretta sea turtles.
At the same time, a possible fire in the area around sekania can destroy the surface vegetation and subsequent erosion to take you to the beach dirt and mud and to cover the sand, where they make their nests of the turtles.
For this reason, the two πυροφύλακες of the WWF, after being trained properly by qualified personnel of the forestry programme of the organisation and of the Department of Technologies of the Environment of the TEI of Zakynthos, are located each day on the ramparts to ward off any potential threat.
In cooperation with the ΕΘΠΖ , the Fire Service, all the responsible bodies and the ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝΑ recording the nests, care for what occurs on a daily basis. Their main concern is the early detection of forest fires, in order to be notified as soon as possible for the Fire brigade to suppress them.

Our country hosts approximately 60% of the nests of the Mediterranean, but the two most important nesting areas: the six beaches of Laganas bay in Zakynthos island and the southern bay of kyparissia in the western Peloponnese.
In both of these areas recorded an average of 1865 nests when overall throughout the Mediterranean the average number of nests is a little more than 7,200. Turtles caretta there are, however, almost everywhere in the Greek seas.
Sea turtles play an important role in marine ecosystems and help to maintain the health of coral reefs and seagrass beds. In particular, the way in which the food of the loggerhead turtle, digging and gouging the seabed contribute to the recycling of important nutrients and maintains the balance in the benthic sediments.
As stated by the organization, the loggerhead turtle may face a risk. A possible change of the european legislation. “The turtles and the nesting beaches are protected by the european habitats directive (92/43/EEC).
Today, however, the european legislation for nature is in danger from the possibility of revising and weakening, through the evaluation process that has been initiated by the European Commission. And this, despite the fact that the data has the same at the Commission’s disposal reveal that the legislation is suitable for the preservation of the european natural heritage”.
