15 February – a Day dedicated to the real heroes of life-“Today, 3 out of 4 kids are all right”…
You never know how much power you’re hiding in your… children suffering from cancer, give a very little tough battles in the arena of life.
But it makes it harder for the rest of their lives.
The 15th of February has been established as the World Day Against the Î Î±Î´Î¹ÎºÎ¿Ï Cancer, and because of this, the TELEGRAM(tilegrafima.en) contact with the President of the Flame(Parents Association With Neoplastic Disease), mrs. Maria ΤÏυφωνίδη.
In detail everything said by mrs. Maria ΤÏυφωνίδη in the TELEGRAM (tilegrafima.gr):
-First I would like to tell us a few words about the work of the Flame.
The Flame is Association of Parents of children with cancer. Founded in 1982 by a handful of parents today really embracing thousands of families all over Greece and is struggling next to the kids.
-How many children hosts the roof?
The work of the Flame is not only a hostel hospitality. Of course, it is a very important task, we host around 35 children from all over Greece for as long as I have to stay in Athens, totally free, and soon the capacity will reach 50 kids. We have two hostels-in-progress tool, but beyond that, we support the medical care of children and there spent the main part of our revenue. We employ doctors in the oncology sections of Athens , equip the hospitals with medical equipment, and various machines that are necessary for the hospitalization of our children , consumables and in addition we do private home care for children residing in the basin to reduce the possible visits of children in hospitals.
-The revenue of the Flame, what is it? Where is the money to do all of this?
The revenue coming from all of you. We don’t have European Programs, we have grants from the state, but we have thousands of friends who have the smaller or the larger table in support of our work.
So, the position of the state in all your work is nil?
You want to say to you an indicative example? When we bought the ct scanner which operates in the Hagia Sophia , is the only ct scanner in the entire basin we paid and F.E.A 93.000 euros. This is the help of the state. This time there’s nothing, no help. For us, the biggest problem is the lack of doctors. We weigh up the crisis that exists , we reduce our requirements, we are not asking for something that you don’t have the rest of our fellow citizens. We are asking for medical assistance. We are asking for something to live for children. The lack of doctors is the biggest problem at this time, and we arrived at the point to pay 10 doctors on the Oncology Sections of Athens.
-The rates of children suffering from the disease have increased or decreased in the last few years?
The percentages of children suffering we don’t see to have increased , it is estimated that around 350 of the year about in all of Greece suffering. This has increased a lot in the last few years is the rates of healing.
-In this I would like to stand, because I read a survey of the Greek society of Pediatric Hematology Oncology, which indicate that most of the battles against children’s cancer can no longer be won…
Today 3 out of 4 kids are all right. Most can be defeated , especially the λευκαιμίες and lymphoproliferative, have cure rates over 80%.
-Finally, I would like a message for today’s day…
It is hopeful that today we got to become good children, but what we want to say to all parents is that this percentage can climb even more if we succeed in early diagnosis. Will have all parents to have in mind the symptoms that persist in order to resort to the pediatrician, which is the only competent to investigate. It doesn’t mean that some of the symptoms that persist are always cancer, but you have to we’re looking for parents. Early diagnosis can lead to cure even more children.
