Portugal: Delta mutation responsible for 90% of new coronavirus cases

The Portuguese authorities are concerned that the country is on the verge of the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa called on citizens to remain vigilant, at a time when 90% of cases are related to the Delta mutation.

Cases rose after Portugal opened its borders to British tourists and European citizens in mid-May.

Today, the number rose to February levels, when a lockdown was imposed in the country. Now, most businesses have reopened and, in the middle of the tourist season, the beaches are full of people.

“We can not relax,” Costa said, urging the Portuguese to continue to observe hygiene measures and distances.

Although only 38% of the population has been vaccinated to date, the new cases mainly affect unvaccinated young people.

Deaths, however, have not increased, they remain in single digits, well below the levels of February.
