Paul Alexander: The man who lived with “iron lung” died for 70 years.

Paul Alexander, the man who lived in an iron lung for more than 70 years, after having left him paralyzed, died at the age of 78. Paul was paralyzed from the left side since 1952 when at the age of six he contracted polio and was paralyzed from the neck down. A fundraising agency for his health care confirmed that Paul Alexander from Dallas, Texas, who died on Monday (11.03.2024), without giving more details. He got polio at six and was paralyzed. It is recalled that Paul Alexander spent a special life inside an iron lung machine after he was infected with polio in 1952, at the age of 6, which left him paralyzed from the neck down. Unable to breathe alone, he spent most of his life in an iron lung, on which he relied to breathe for more than seven decades. Despite incredible difficulties he became a writer and lawyer while never losing his positive attitude and smile. Christopher Ulmer, an organizer and activist for the rights of disabled people, said: “Paul Alexander, the man with the iron lung, died yesterday. After surviving polio as a child, he lived over 70 years in an iron lung. During this time, Paul attended college, became a lawyer and writer. His story traveled very far, positively affecting people around the world.” How the iron lung worked The respirator, which resembles a large metal box of yellow color, requires patients to lie in it, with the device firmly attached around their necks. It works by creating a vacuum for mechanical oxygen suction in the lungs of patients whose central nervous system and respiratory function were destroyed by polio. While Paul Alexander was in the hospital, the doctors were trying to get him to breathe alone, deactivating the machine and forcing him to go out, but he was not slow to bruise and faint. Despite the availability of more modern ventilators, Paul decided to continue using the iron lung machine because he was used to it. Other devices also require surgery. During his life, he never let the device get in the way of what he wanted to achieve, travel by planes, live independently, fall in love, pray in the church and visit the ocean. During his studies he met Claire, whom he was engaged to. However, his proposal had no happy ending as Claire’s mother banned her from marrying him. “It took me years to get over it” he told Guardian. What polio is Poliomyelitis is an infectious viral disease affecting the respiratory function of the central nervous system and can cause muscle weakness and paralysis. It is transmitted through contaminated water and food or through contact with an infected person. It has largely been eliminated around the world after the widespread use of the vaccine that began to be used in the 1950s. The disease remains endemic to only four countries today: Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Information From
