The importance of awareness for early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease
The awareness of the world and of health professionals in order to achieve a timely diagnosis of the disease is crucial, because then the pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions can significantly slow down the progression of the disease and to improve the quality of life of patients and their carers. A pivotal role in this play so the actions of awareness-raising through seminars, lectures and conferences, as well as the νευροψυχολογικός control (tests of memory, attention, concentration, οπτικοχωρικών and executive functions, scale of disposal), where the accuracy can be diagnosed at an early stage, disorders of higher cognitive functions and the patient immediately placed in a treatment program.
The “Καρέλλειο Integrated Unit Dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Diseases” of the Charity Organisation MISSION of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens operates a Clinic in Memory, in order to be diagnosed with the disease on the basis of international diagnostic criteria, Day Center and a Unit of Permanent and Short-stay, where patients participate in programs of non-pharmaceutical interventions (mental strengthening, physical therapy, physical therapy, music therapy) by specialized scientific personnel, which in combination with their medication are the most appropriate method of dealing with the problems of the disease as well as inhibit and delay significantly the development of this.
