Nissan and Mitsubishi explore mobility and energy services using electric vehicles

Motor Co., Ltd. (Nissan) and Corporation (MC) signed a memorandum of cooperation to investigate a new joint initiative in next generation mobility services and energy-related services using electric vehicles (EVs). The aim is to help resolve regional social issues and create living future communities. Japan as a country faces issues such as driver shortages due to population decline and difficulties in maintaining public transport services due to a reduction in the number of users. Nissan and MC have taken various initiatives to resolve these challenges. Nissan initiatives include mobility services in the city of Namie, Fukushima Province, and an autonomous driving test in the Minato Mirai region in Yokohama to achieve free movement for more people. In addition, Nissan develops energy management systems using EV battery storage and charging functions combined with renewable energy sources. MC, in cooperation with partners and local governments, faces social and industrial challenges through initiatives focusing on (1) the use of regional energy resources, including renewable energy sources, (2) the achievement of carbon neutrality and (3) the creation of attractive communities by resolving local issues. In the field of mobility, MC extends measures to improve transport through the application of AI on-demand movements for local governments and private companies, including Shiojiri City in Nagano Province, and carrying out autonomous driving demonstrations using digital solutions. Regional social issues are expected to become more complex. Some of these include increasing people facing obstacles to transport, reducing basic services, weakening community ties and the need for disaster preparedness. Nissan and MC recognise the need to develop models of new technologies and services to resolve these specific regional challenges and to revitalize communities. To achieve this and contribute to society, they have signed a memorandum of cooperation to co-create sustainable business models. By leveraging their respective know-how and knowledge, both companies aim to jointly market next generation mobility services and energy-related services using EVs, starting in Japan. Makoto Uchida, President and CEO of Nissan, said: “Through exciting vehicles and technologies, Nissan builds a clever ecosystem that expands both people’s mobility capabilities and society’s potential. We want to help solve regional issues and create future-focused cities through new mobility and energy management services. MC has common goals with us and together we will study a strong and sustainable business model.” Katsuya Nakanishi, Chairman and CEO of Mitsubishi Corporation said: “As the mobility sector undergoes significant transformations due to technological innovation and carbon emission discharge, MC, through the integrated EX-DX approach described in our medium-term strategy, MC Shared Value 2024, aims to work with Nissan to explore the creation of sustainable business models facing Japan’s social challenges”.
