Moldova to buy American LNG from Greece

For the first time today (1.4.2024) and tomorrow the gas company of Energocom will supply its consumers with test quantities of American liquefied (LNG), according to its announcement. Moldova relied almost exclusively on Russian gas under an agreement with the Gazprom State-controlled, but gradually began to intensify its diversification efforts, after Moscow’s full-scale invasion of neighbouring Ukraine two years ago. Energocom reports in a communication that it will purchase LNG from the Alexandroupolis floating terminal in collaboration with the Greek state company DEPA Commercial SA. “On Monday and Tuesday, we will buy 14,000 MWh (megawatt hours) of natural gas per day at the port of Alexandroupolis. A total of around 28,000 MWh, equivalent to 2.6 million cubic meters of gas,” Energocom director Victor Vinsaz said. The company has already checked the route through which the introduction from Greece will take place, buying a small amount of gas in 2023. Moldova is currently not buying gas from Russia, but the breakaway Transnistria region is based on its own supplies from Russia. The total quantity of gas demand exceeds 3 billion cubic metres per year.
