Metro Thessaloniki: The reshaping of the area around the station “New Switzerland” begins soon

The reconstruction of the area around the station “New Switzerland” of the main project of the Thessaloniki metro, which is located in part of Michael Psellos Street, which is currently unopened. As this station lacks accessibility from pedestrians and vehicles to enable it to operate, accompanying configuration projects of the surrounding area should be implemented. In addition, provision is made for the establishment of suitable passenger transport facilities to enable the Metro to be connected with other public transport, as well as for the road interconnection of these facilities with the surrounding area. The Regional Committee of the Region of Central Macedonia approved, at its last meeting, the draft Programme Convention and its conclusion between the Greek Metro Monoface SA, the Region of Central Macedonia and the Municipality of Thessaloniki, on the accompanying supporting projects of the New Switzerland Station of Thessaloniki, a budget of 10.5 million euros. According to the relevant proposal of the Region services approved by the Regional Committee, “the responsibility of building these facilities belongs to the Greek Metro, which will build a modern Transhipment Station (S.M.) urban bus, taxi and means of private transportation, with all electromechanical installations and necessary systems, as well as ensuring access to it. It will also build a ground floor building in the wider area of the Station of Transhipment intended for the mandatory rest of bus drivers during the working hours and additional spaces for the control room and the electromechanical facilities of the Station.” At the same time, the opening of Michael Psellos Street and the construction of its respective junction hubs with the national road Thessaloniki – Moudanion, Papanastasiou Street and New Switzerland bus transfer terminal are planned. Parking spaces are expected to be created at the transfer station and are estimated at approximately two hundred places. According to Deputy Regional Infrastructure and Networks of the Central Macedonia Region Pari Billia, initial estimates for the start of construction work are placed within a month of the contract being signed while the goal is to complete the work by November when the commercial operation of the subway will begin. Funds for the implementation of these projects come from the NSRF.
