Low birth rates and emigration reduce the population of Greece

A reduction of nearly 75,000 people showed the resident population of Greece in 2016, according to the latest figures from ELSTAT…
The voltage reduction is attributed to the falling birth rate and the migration abroad due to crisis.
The permanent population of the country on the 1st of January 2017 is estimated to be 10.783.748 people (5.224.210 men and 5.559.538 women), decreased by 0.68% compared with the corresponding population of 1 January 2015, which was 10.858.018 people.
This development is a result of the natural reduction of the population amounted to 29.365 people (91.847 births compared 121.212 deaths) and negative net migration was estimated at 44.905 people (64.446 incoming versus 109.351 outgoing migrants).
In 2014, net migration was estimated at -47.791 people (59.013 incoming and 106.804 outgoing migrants).
The population aged 0 to 14 amounted to 14,4% of the total population, compared to 64,3% and 21.3% of the population 15 – 64 years and 65 years and over, respectively.
The index of aging (population aged 65 and over to population aged 0-14 years old) amounted to 147,3.
