Lampros Tzoumis: The “messages” from the Kasselakis term, television appearances and petty political aims

The president of the main opposition Mr. shortly before enlisting to fulfill his twenty-day military service, according to the current legislation, said: “It is an honor to be here to serve my country. .’ It is good that his president feels pride in fulfilling his military service if we consider that during the 1st conference of Syriza youth in April 2017, the positions expressed for military service were that: “The Army belongs to the state’s repressive mechanisms and at the same time acts as an ideological mechanism, embroidering aspects of dominant ideology, such as persuasion, obedience, nationalism, while contributing to shaping youth identity”. We should also point out that in an interview given by Mr. Kasselakis he said that the Army’s First Line Units should serve professional military personnel and the Internal Units should have a short-term social service. The president of Syriza should be informed that a key pillar of our war preparation is the reserve. A purely professional army means that there will be no training for military personnel, so there will be no reserve. In the negatives to take into account the costs, since supporting a purely professional army is particularly costly. The concept of social service is linked to the objection of conscience and the obligation to recruit. Concerning the short-term term of Mr. Kasselakis, special attention was given by the media. for the video he uploaded on social media before enlisting, whether to have special treatment in the camp and more generally in its living conditions. However, it would be appropriate instead of the above to have a reflection on what the twenty-day term of office serves and what messages it sends to young people who have not yet joined the Armed Forces ranks. Each year a number of about 10,000 to 12,000 young people are exempt from their military obligations for health or insubordination reasons. That is, the power of a division of full war composition. Is anyone wondering, a large proportion of Greek youth are disabled and incapable of conscription? Obviously this is not the case, but some think given the messages they receive as stated above: “Why go to the Army if I find a way to avoid it?” Interesting is how they treated Ancient Sparta those who refused to enlist or chicken out during the battle. They called them sceptical “Tresades”, i.e. those who tremble out of fear. They lost their civil rights, and were the target of social contempt. In modern Greece conscientious objectors who refuse to serve it advertise it on social media and are appointed councillors of political leaders. In parallel with the above, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced for the military service the adoption of the “Finnish model” with the possibility of forming an academic profile by the military, but without deciding to increase the term of office that is undisputed for the Land Army. To point out that the problem of the low staffing of the Land Army units due to the short term of service, combined with a number of problems affecting education and falsifying the officials of the Land Army units. The conduct of training is characterised by contracts mainly due to the employment of already reduced personnel for safety and operational needs. Exercising Division Commanders are tested in conditions far removed from those that will be called upon to face in combat conditions. The short term of service of the gunmen and the assignment to them of multiple tasks results in the creation of an untrained reserve. It is appropriate to understand that the duration of the term of office is determined in relation to service-operational needs and should in no case be included in any petty political considerations.
