Kavala: An archeocave was arrested who made illegal excavations in an archaeological site

He was arrested in the police station, and at the house he lived in Serres… A 53-year-old was arrested and against him a file was formed for violating the Legislation concerning the protection of antiquities, illegal excavation within a declared archaeological site, illegal use of metal detector and violation of the monument declaration obligation. In particular, in the evening hours of 27 March an organized operation was carried out, during which the arrester was detected and it was found that, using a metal detector, a pair of acoustics, small sized scaffolding and improvised digging tool, he was proceeding to an illegal ground excavation located on a declared archaeological site in Kavala. After investigations that followed, they were found and seized in the possession of the 53-year-old and in his residence in a region of Serres: two lead objects and two ancient Roman coins which were shown to be an archaeologist of the Serres Antiquities Institute and found to fall under the provisions of the Law concerning “The Verification of Law on the Protection of Antiquities and in general cultural heritage”. In addition, two portable transmitters were seized from his home.
