After the confrontation…
a burkini, this summer, the supreme administrative court of France will be asked to answer whether it is legal the adornment of public buildings with christmas nativity scenes.
A law of 1905 on secularism of the state prohibits all religious symbols in public places. Last year was kind of a fuss with the nativity scenes that represented the birth of Jesus and were placed in various town halls, however, the courts examined the cases in each city separately issued diametrically opposed decisions.
Almost two months before Christmas, the special rapporteur of the Council of State underlined that the law of 1905 does not prohibit nativity scenes in public buildings only if it is a “recognition of a cult”. In accordance with Aurelie Μπρετονό, the nativity scenes are allowed to be placed if they are part of the festive decoration for Christmas. However, it should not be accompanied by any “suspicion of religious conversion,” but to maintain “the character of a cultural event”.
The judges of the Council of State is expected to announce their decision within the next few weeks, however usually do not deviate from the proposal of the rapporteurs.
At the end of August many municipalities in the south of France banned the burkini, a swimsuit that you wear some muslim women, considering the religious symbol. But the Council of State ruled then that the garment that can’t be banned because it causes problems in the preservation of public order.
