It was used traditionally as an insecticide and insect repellent. In traditional healing systems, the hyssop was widely used for the treatment of sore throats, colds, bronchitis, inflammations, colic bowel, as an appetite stimulant and as an expectorant. The plant was used in perfumes and foods to liqueurs, sauces, puddings and desserts.
The hyssop contains a number of aromatic and volatile components. The chemicals pinocamphone, isopinocamphone, πινένια, camphene and alpha-terpinene account for about 70% of the volatile oil. Side effects
The Hyssop has emmenagogue and an abortifacient effects and should not be used by pregnant and breast-feeding.The herb, especially in the form of essential oils has been implicated in convulsions. In studies of rats treated with high doses of essential oils in injectable form experienced a generalized seizure with convulsions and death.
The neurotoxicity of hyssop appears to be associated, is related to the terpenes it contains. Άσθενείς who suffer from epilepsy should not use the herb.
