Holocaust: Thessaloniki honored the victims 81 years after the 1943 express day

The honor of his victims, 81 years from the day the first train, full of Jews living in the city, began for the Auschwitz camp… With a central slogan “Never Again” Thessaloniki honored today the Holocaust Victims Memorial Day in Auschwitz. In a climate of emotion the silent course of memory took place from Liberty Square to the Old Railway Station, on the occasion of the completion of 81 years from the express day, the first train to Auschwitz-Bergenau camp, where about 50,000 Thessalonians Jews were killed. Participants held banners and white balloons with the main slogan of the course “never again”. The event was attended, among other things, by the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, the President of the Israeli Community of Thessaloniki, David Saltiel, the Head of the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA, Socrates Famellus, the Member of Parliament of the territory of the ND, Nefeli Hatzioannidou, members of the parties, representatives of the Local Government and the representatives of universities. Today’s event is co-organized by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Macedonia and the International University of Greece.
