“I decided to resign so as not to engage the ministry in a scandal three months before parliamentary elections,” said in a statement, the Toba, rejecting “strongly (…) the charges” against him.
Romanians are being asked to elect the new government on 11 December, while the political climate in the country is tense because of the many corruption cases that “touch” the traditional political parties.
The Toba was a member of the government of technocrats took power about a year ago, on 31 October 2015, after the fire that killed 64 young people in a discotheque in Bucharest.
The Prosecutor’s office Anti-Corruption (DNA) accuses the former minister that he refused to public prosecutors to have access to documents which are classified “defence confidential” and dealt with some unexpected purchases made by the General Police Inspection (DIPI). According to the DNA, the DIPI bought, among others, “children’s houses with pit sand, decks of cards, a game of darts, an electric oven compared with another 11,700 euro.
A total of 24 officers of the DIPI accused of forgery and abuse of an amount of € 49,000.
The investigation began in October last year, after the death of a motorcyclist police that came with the previous minister of Interior, Gabriel Οπρέα the motorcade, which was moving with excessive speed. Prosecutors found that the Οπρέα used and abused a police escort, and in addition had an expensive car which he had purchased on its behalf by the DIPI, in violation of the law.
The DNA has today asked the Senate to lift the immunity of the former minister, whom he blames for “negligent homicide” for the death of a police escort.
