Gaza Strip: Young people prefer to be killed rather than continue living in these conditions

“The living conditions in are such that young people say in how they hope to be killed, in order to put an end to this nightmare,” a United Nations Children Fund spokesman said. In statements made through a video conference by Rafa, Unicef spokesman, James Elder, said the situation in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated to such an extent that it constitutes a “one of the darkest chapters in mankind’s history”. “Last night, Unicef chatted with teenagers, many of whom said they were so desperate that they want so badly to put an end to this nightmare, (to such an extent) that they hope to be killed,” she said, during a regular UN press conference. “Our unspeakable story is often told in Gaza,” he completed. The war between Israel and Hamas flared after the unprecedented attack launched on 7 October by Hamas from the Gaza Strip. At the time the Gaza Strip, which Israel is besieging, is on the brink of famine, calls are intensifying in order for Israel to open more crossing points to the Palestinian enclave. According to the United Nations, before the war, at least 500 trucks were entering daily, at the moment about 150. “Israeli control and inspect every gram, every liter, every kilo of everyone entering Gaza,” noted a spokesperson for the UN Humanitarian Affairs Office, Jens Larke, during the press conference. “But they cannot say, once aid enters Gaza, that it is up to us exclusively to deal with it. They must create an environment that will facilitate the distribution of aid, he noted. Unicef’s spokesman confirmed that the period between 1 and 22 March, only 25% of 40 humanitarian aid missions in the northern part of Gaza were allowed in. “There is an old transit point that could be used in the northern part, 10 minutes from the area where these people are begging to give them food. By opening this crossing point, we could put an end to this humanitarian crisis within a few days. But it remains closed,” he stressed. And he concluded: In Gaza, “violent aid is blocked, lives are lost, dignity is violated.”
