EOPY: 4 coronavirus deaths and one influenza – Analyticalally the new epidemiological data

According to the EOB briefing, the number of flu cases per 1,000 visits showed a decrease compared to last week. The number of SARI cases per 1,000 visits showed an increase over the previous week. As far as coronavirus is concerned, the positiveness of all samples tested has decreased over the previous week. The number of imports (n=104) showed a 46% decrease compared to the average weekly number of imports in the previous 4 weeks (n=194) and was lower than the number of imports in the corresponding week of 2023 (n=691). The number of new intubations (n=1) showed a decrease compared to the average weekly number of new intubations over the previous 4 weeks (n=4) and was lower than the number of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 (n=17). The number of patients infected with COVID-19 intubated is 13. 4 deaths with median age were recorded at 92.5 years (range 86-96 years). The number of deaths showed a decrease compared to the average weekly number of deaths in the previous 4 weeks (n=14) and was lower than the number of deaths in the corresponding week of 2023 (n=66). The most frequent sub-variant of BA.2 remains JN.1 (> 85% from week 6 onwards) Viral load surveillance in urban sewage showed a decrease in SARS-CoV-2 virus circulation in 7 of the 8 areas checked. Influenza Positiveness for influenza in the community (sentinel network) remains over 10% (seasonal onset limit for epidemic influenza activity in ECDC) and showed a decrease compared to the previous week. The positiveness of SARI samples showed a slight increase over the previous week. A new serious case with ICU hospitalisation was recorded and a new death by laboratory confirmed flu. From week 40/2023 to week 12/2024 134 people were treated with laboratory confirmed influenza in ICU and 66 deaths were recorded from laboratory confirmed influenza. From week 40/2023 to week 12/2024 724 flu strains (derived from Sentinel community samples, SARI surveillance samples and from hospital samples outside surveillance networks) of which 539 (75%) were type A and 182 (25%) type B strains have been standardized. Overall, 520 Type A strains have been standardised in the two Reference Centres. 481 (92.5%) belonged to subtype A(H1)pdm09 and 39 (7.5%) to subtype A(H3). Respiratory sympathetic virus – RSV RSV positiveness remains low in the community (Sentinel PHY network), and in hospitals (Sari surveillance network).
